Q: What are you doing now?

Apart from answering these questions :-), I'm in Cork, reviewing my meetings with Advertising Agencies and planning my next appointments. I'm also putting together the marketing and growth plan for Ad Dynamo Ireland and making sure that our customers are experiencing the best service we can provide.

Q: What’s your typical work day?

Checking on clients’ campaigns and helping to streamline them, meeting new and existing clients, keeping up to speed with the latest tech news, planning Ad Dynamo's growth, sharing information with our worldwide offices and having coffee. I like coffee….a LOT!

Q: What’s your favourite aspect of work?

The variety of roles. I love the fact that one minute I might be talking to a huge advertising agency and the next to a one man business. It's brilliant to be able to provide a service to such a wide range of clients.
I really enjoy planning the growth of the company and seeing the results of even the smallest goal being achieved. My biggest satisfaction is seeing happy customers.

Q: What is your background?

I come from an IT background and specifically programming / web development. I started "messing" with computers from a relatively young age and progressed from cleaning / repairing PCs in a computer shop, to working on very large online developments.
My experience has given me a very rounded understanding of IT requirements, be they hardware or software, online or offline as well as an understanding of people’s expectations of IT and how to deliver the right solution for those expectations.

Q: What’s the best thing that happened in the last year?

By FAR, the birth of our first baby, Olivia. In terms of work, the entry into the Irish market.of Ad Dynamo. It's amazing to watch the growth of both my babies :-)

Q: What is your best source of new business/ new members?

Picking up the phone or writing an email. I find Twitter quite good for "breaking the ice" in certain sectors, but nothing beats personal contact like a phone call or a meeting. Referrals by current customers or recommendations by business contacts also make up quite a large percentage of business growth.

Q: How do you communicate with your customers?

The main point of contacts is the phone or email. As well as via our own website, we use Twitter quite a lot to interact with people but try and keep the "sell" to a minimum. We also have a Facebook page where we add features that people may not be aware of, answer any issues and generally encourage our fans to share something about themselves.  If one of them can benefit from the service of another fan, all the better.

Q: What does customer service mean to you?

Customer service means replying to the query as if it was ME who wanted a question answered or an issue resolved. It means making that question or issue PERSONAL. Meaning that the manner in which it was resolved would make ME ecstatic about the way it was done. Our logo is a smiley face for a reason :D

Q: How do you use the internet in your business?

We are an online business so naturally we use the internet constantly to provide and refine our service. I use it to keep accounts, save & share documents, keep up to date with news & events, communicate, do the banking, CRM, PR and chat with @xcelbusiness on Twitter :-)

Q: What form of business planning do you use?

Mind maps, goal setting and ACTING on the them :-), talking to people about their businesses and what issues they encounter or what processes they use. I try and read books on business but in the end the message is the same; "Plan and execute". HOW you plan, is a mixture of experience, tools and trial and error. Making mistakes is a great way to refine your processes.

Q: Any low brow vices? Jedward? Coronation Street? McDonalds?
Jedward, no, although I did bump into John or Edward in the hotel and I was momentarily star-struck!
[Note from Ed: This interview was conducted a few weeks ag0 - before Jedward went into the Big Brother house].
Q: What does innovation mean to you?

In general terms, I think innovation is the ability to see the current status quo and provide new or modified solutions. Preferably simpler ones.
From the business point of view, I believe that innovation should simplify the way we do things and the way our clients use our services. This doesn't mean a loss of functionality, just a better user experience.

Q: How do you handle negative feedback from customers?

Badly :-) I take it personally and I make sure that the issue it resolved beyond their expectation. The worst kind of feedback is no feedback at all, so while I dread our customers having a bad experience, I WANT to know about it. This gives me a chance to help resolve it and make sure it never happens again.

Q: Is business networking, either online and / or offline, of benefit to you?

Yes. It always helps to talk to people in different ways and sometimes, the oddest conversations can lead to interesting business partnerships.

Q: Best time management tip?

Write down a list of what needs to be done for the day. Only use social media for a specific percentage of your day. Make specific provision for answering emails then close your email client outside of this time. Get Ad Dynamo to manage your online campaigns :-)

Q: Is there anything that defeats you?

Time management!  Although I'm getting very disciplined, every now and again I still find myself procrastinating. Generally this means I just need to take a 20min break for coffee… Also, in my cycling days, LOTS of people defeated me :-)

Gianni, thanks for giving us a peek into the world of online adverising, and best of luck with your business.
